The Convict 100 marathon MTB race is now one of the oldest marathon races in Australia. Staring and finishing in St Albans racing along parts of the historical Convict Trail. River crossings on floating bridges and big climbs are popular features for the riders.
I have been photographing this event for some time now, mostly taking photographs of competitors under my event photography business Outer Image Collective but the organizer needed exciting images from parts of the course we just cannot get to due to logistic issues with shooting competitors at multiple locations. So what better way to take images from within the race itself. Challenge set and accepted. E-bike to the rescue as there is no way I can stop and shoot riders without soon falling into last place and never seen another rider all day….. Or so I thought.
There are great many locations on this course with views over the valleys, along the convict trail and after doing the big climbs some great descents to put on a smile but these don’t get photographed much if at all. I have ridden the whole course with friends before but with its layout driving is just not an option.
This race is a bit remote to get to and seeing you need access it by a ferry than its not something many just rock up to on the morning of the race, many camp out on site so this is part of the event atmosphere. This all needs to captured as its becoming a bit of an institution to do this race.
Like all events. I deliver images via my website to clients using a private password protected gallery allowing them to select their favourites leaving them online for whenever they are needed.
