The country of Iceland is a barren and tough land, but in that toughness comes a unique beauty with the mixture of lava rock, green moss, treeless hills and of course huge glaciers. I’ve been in winter and knew I wanted to return in summer so started looking for potential clients to work with, the result Made in Mountains Glacier 360 3 day mountain bike stage race.
As always clients want images that shows of their dream, the uniqueness that separates their event from the others and this was definitely one of them. Being the organisers official photographer I was given access to a quad bike and driver, our goal was to simply drive the course and photograph anything I saw that caught my eye. Easy in terms of mind blowing amazing scenery with riders racing their guts out whether to win or just finish each stage. Not so easy as this is a rough course, shooting from a quad bike doing “half-squat” all day to reduce bumps meant sore legs come the end of it.
Working with such passionate and motivated people is great. I still remember one morning getting onto the quad and my driver and race director said to me “lets go make some history” I loved it. This type of attitude really connects with me and spurs me on and fills me with a sense of appreciation as I know my work is helping them achieve their goals.
Sitting at the end of each day at the media table is also a great inspiration. Other photographers working with a team, video guys working for the event and a local covering the event for Red Bull we all got to share our day, work and knowledge making new friendships.
Delivery of images happened a little differently at this event as often we did not have internet so a hard drive was passed around in turn to everyone to upload their work each day. I still always make images available via my website once back in civilisation as hard drives get lost, damaged or someone else from the event needs access to them and does not have the drive on hand.
