Anthony Elliott has been racing many races I photograph for a client and over the years I have seen him progress and becoming one of the main riders to try and beat at these races. He is a quiet unassuming rider and just enjoys getting out to race and now does so for his local bike shop Pushys on the Commencal Gravity team.
Our shoot was on his local trails at Stromlo MTB Park, Canberra. We didn’t have alot of time to shoot and it was the afternoon so knowing the trails very well at Stromlo we drove to the top and headed to the backside to use the evening setting sun. We shot for a while and Antony took me to some to some trails I don’t get to shoot as event organizers stay away from them in my experiences. This was great as it added to my archive of shot locations I can use for future shoots if need be. Using a mix of Nikon speedlights for tight trails and bringing out big battery powered studio strobes for different shots gave me some freedom to mix up styles.
We lucked out with pretty beautiful evening light as the sun slowing started to dip low over the Brindabella mountain range, the clouds were in perfect position and we raced to get spot I knew would work with the light.
Antony hit the line a few times with me moving to a new angle for each run producing some nice images for both Anthony to use as profile pics / social media / etc and me in my portfolio. It’s great to do shoots sometimes without any structured plan when you are short on time and just going with the flow so to say, its in that time you can discover new ideas and places.
