Beards and single speed mountain bike riders seem to hand in hand like PBJ on toast. Kevin Wynne-Smythe is no different and racing on his Pivot Cycles LES is the perfect combo. We hit the trails around his place which he dubbed his “tech training” with lots of steps, drops, jumps all not his normal trail surfaces when racing 24hour or XC mountain bike events.
Kevin told me the area had lots of rocks and trees and we wanted to capture images for him to use and the portfolio so we hit the trails early before the heat got to us. No plan here or time to pre-scout the area so we just made a big loop of the trails and when I saw something that looked nice we set up a shot, capture a few angles and moved on. Kevin rides for the Jetblack MTB club and was wearing the new jersey so it was also an opportune time to snap some shots of it in use.
I really enjoy working with athletes like this just going out and trying shots with no real set agenda just going with the flow. Often it produces the best images or I find a new idea in something I shoot which I can than pursue further.
