WEMBO ROTORUA

WEMBO or the 24Hour Solo World Championships challenges the riders in the ultimate test of endurance both physically and mentally.  Racing in a different country each year gives riders from all over the world the opportunity to be crowned world champ, none more than seven times winnter Australian Jason English.

I’ve known Jason English for a while now and when I found out that the next WEMBO was on only across the Tasman I first checked he was going and then contacted his main sponsor Jetblack Products about my idea for a video.   Now I say a video not videos as that was the idea but after some talking it was decided that four videos, one for each major sponsor of Jason was best.  So a video for Jetblack Products, Pivot Cycles, NiteRider lights and Stans NoTubes was agreed upon.

Alot of planning went into the job working up a shot list of ideas, getting GPS files of the course to work out potential ideas and general logistics of getting around the course.  Then when I arrived in NZ with the group went out as soon as I could to double check my ideas and find more.  This provided an opportunity to catch up with Jason pre-race and shoot some footage on the trails so I could get some some planned clips where Jason may need to ride a section more than once.  Also after putting some questions together and having his mechanic, Jason Moxham, assist we filmed some talking head clips to use in the final videos.

All videos were shot using a Glidecam HD-2000, Nikon D810 and/or D800 and on camera Rhode Video Mic Pro.  Once the race began I wandered out around the course until dark returning for a feed and some rest.  Once it was light enough again to shoot I was back out on the trails.  Using my DSLR allowed me to capture some still images as well as they are capable of both and using one camera ensured I was familiar with its functions to be fast and efficient.

Jetblack wanted videos of Jason using their Whisper Drive trainer for warmup or leading up to the event to stay loose but unable to get one to us in time for the event.  So after the win and back in Australia I made a trip to Jason’s home and shot the footage needed.  Being flexible and willing to work with changes is important as rarely does everything go to plan when shooting at a race as I cannot ask the rider to “Do it again please, this time go faster.”
