Kings MTB Classic is an annual event held in November on the school ground of The Kings School. The event promotes sports amongst students as they invite other schools to particpate and parents “Old Boys” who attended the school as well.
I have been photographing and shooting a video for The Kings School for a number of years now. The photography side is done under my event photography business, Outer Image Collective, where along with my colleague and a team member photographer we photograph each competitor as part of the event to share with family and friends.
The video, although short, is a chance to for parent of students and other school members to see how the school grounds are being used and the great spirit of sport the school instils in its students.
Capturing interviews of participants before the race begins and then the action during the short 2hr race is a very hectic schedule. I use multiple camera from DSLR’s and GoPros unfortunately aerial footage with a drone not permitted as the school is in a no-fly zone.
My Nikon D850 DSLR on the Zhiyun-Tech Crane 2 allows me to get the action while running about on the trails. GoPro’s used for some timelapses or given to a rider to wear on a chesty mount. The start is the busiest with usually three cameras all shooting, two different static angles showing the riders as they charge up the road and another for more dynamic moving shots on the gimbal.
I always try to shoot new ideas each year so having a pre-visualised shot list is helpful as I can check them off as I go along as two hours goes quite quickly and it’s easy to stay out on the trails and run out of time before returning to the finish for transition shots, presentations and winning smiles as riders cross the finish line.
