I was working on a black and white project and wanted to incorporate this into some portrait images of athletes as a move away from just action shots of sport. I was down in Canberra for an event and started thinking through names of people I know who might be interested in helping me out with images. Garry was very helpful and put his hand up enthusiastic like he is I feel in all that he does whether in his fitness business or when on the bike.
First shots were at sunrise. I was already in Canberra as this was the day after the event and Garry was more than happy to put the lights on for some for some first light images on the trails.
Then for something a little different we headed to an old building at the observatory that looks over Stromlo MTB Park in Canberra. Throwing the bikes up against the walls and having Garry stand in with and without bikes worked well as the walls gave some nice texture to the black and whites.
Garry rides both road and off-road so having these bikes available and changes of kit we created some nice casual environmental portraits telling his story and where his passions lie. I love capturing athletes in action but mixing it up and trying something different always is a win in my books as being able to capture a good portrait as well helps share a little something extra we don’t get to see when an athlete is in the zone racing.
